Recap UMRD vs Magic City

Sunday March 25th Uinta Madness hosted an early morning hangover bout versus Magic City Rollers who had squeaked out an 8-point victory against the BBC the night before.

In the first few jams UMRD made it clear they were not going to be pushed around easily and put a quick 20-point lead on the scoreboard.

In the first half UMRD blocker Effn' went down hard in the corner resulting in a shoulder injury.

Despite being down players, including missing jammers Milk Toast Boy and Haunt Whore, the men showed improved strategy and teamwork.

New jammers Kelevra and Thayne as well as big hits from both teams kept the second half interesting and had the crowd cheering for more!

Captain and blocker/jammer extraordinaire Uel Lose not only racked up grand slams and power jams but laid so many hits and spins on Magic City jammers they could hardly skate straight.

With just over a minute left UMRD held a lead of 18 points. Magic City jammer Boioioioing broke the pack and scored and amazing 15-point last jam before the clock ran out.

Final score: Uinta Madness 88 - Magic City 85

BBC vs Magic City Recap

Saturday night Wasatch Roller Derby’s B Team, the Bonneville Bone Crushers hosted their first bout of the season versus Magic City Rollers from Billings Montana.

The bout featured a lot of back-line starts, pace change, split packs and lead changes.

Starting the game with a fast pace and few penalties BBC jammers Lil N. Gin, Clam Jammer, and Penny Slain seemed evenly matched with Magic City jammers Uno Dos Traci, Metal Militia, and Boioioioing.

BBC blockers Fly Girl Mel, Bruiser Ego, Veronica Scars, and Crystal Brawl formed tight back walls to hold back Magic City jammers and on lay on multiple hits while Gunnin Geisha and Tsunami Bombshell opened holes for their BBC jammers.

With each pack fighting for lead, jammers chased each other down straightaways and were forced to call off jams early after eking out just a few points.

Split play led to failure to reform and destruction of pack penalties that hurt both sides.

Right before the half, Magic City jammers took advantage of few blockers on the track and collected ten-point jams finally pulling a significant point spread in the bout.

Half-time score: Magic City Rollers 67 – Bonneville Bone Crushers 44.

Wasatch’s Junior League played a 15-minute half-time scrimmage showing off their improving skating skills and teamwork.

Mascot for the league, Sassy Sasquatch, and WRD cheerleaders got the crowd amped for the rest of the game.

Coming back into the second half BBC proved their utilization of the break to improve their game plan. While a sea of blue held back Magic City’s jammer, BBC’s Clam Jammer racked up 15-points during the first jam of the half.

Bruiser Ego now jamming for the BBC along with Lil N. Gin also captured handfuls of scoring passes.

With the score remaining relatively close throughout the game, it was easy to see penalties change the outcome of a jam.

While Fly Girl Mel and Penny Slain refused to let Magic City jammers pass or break pack, an accumulation of minor and major penalties threatened to kick them from the game.

Both teams showed signs of struggling as mismanagement of clock time and full boxes overwhelmed each bench.

Whit Avenger jamming for Magic City bulldozed her way through BBC walls while Clam Jammer and Lil N. Gin evaded and deflected hits from purple aggressors.

With just 4 minutes left in the game and a tied score of 90-90 BBC’s Penny Slain fouled out of the game. As the clocked counted down Magic City and Bone Crushers clawed for lead. Bruiser Ego getting sent to the box granted MC Rollers a power jam allowing them to reach an 8-point lead.

Final Score: Magic City Rollers 104 – Bonneville Bone Crushers 96.

Players and fans enjoyed after parties at Legends Pub and Grill and Willies Bar.

Skater Smackdown Recap

The home team bout "Skater Smackdown" had the Derby Depot crowd screaming till the last jam!
Improved strategy and teamwork from the Black Diamond Divas and Hot Wheelers made for an intense game. During the first half BDD jammer Bruiser Ego impressed fans with her ability to break through four-blocker HW walls and slip through holes.

Hot Wheelers achieved lead jammer status repeatedly but had a hard time shutting out Diva jammers close on their tails.

Half time score:

Half time show featured Uinta Madness men jumping obstacles, skaters, and audience members!

Halftime also spotlighted the local charity Camp Hobe.

Did You Know Proceeds (40% of net ticket sales) for this Bout went directly to Camp Hobé, an annual summer camp for kids with cancer and their siblings. Camp Hobé is administered and run almost entirely by volunteers, and has served children throughout the Intermountain West for more than 25 years. Their mission is to create an atmosphere that enhances self-esteem, fosters independence and friendships, and offers a sense of belonging. Camp Hobé allows these kids dealing with cancer a chance to just be kids. For more information about the program, visit the Camp Hobé website at www.camphobekids.org.

During the second half Hot Wheelers stepped up their game and fiercely chased down the point gap. With stronger walls and defense Wheelers were able to hold back the Divas and achieve some high point power jams.

With just seconds left Hot Wheeler Clam Jammer narrowed the score to a measly 5 point lead!

Due to a mix up between officials and BDD, the Divas had an extra skater on the track during the last jam which lead to a controversial conclusion. Unfortunately without the refs calling off the jam or time left on the clock, the rules determined nothing could be done to redo the last jam.

Final score:

Amount donated to Camp Hobé: $1148 in WRD ticket sales, $250 in additional audience donations!!!
